Peewee AA Beavers win Saskatoon league championship

Jul 18, 2017 | 5:00 PM

After winning an impressive 12 of 15 regular season games in the Saskatoon Minor Baseball league this season, the peewee AA North Battleford Beavers continued to roll in the league playoffs, winning all their games en route to the league championship.

Their perfect playoff record, which started with wins over the Blue Jay Prospects, the Cardinals, the Bandit Braves, and Humboldt, was capped off with a 12-6 win over the Saskatoon Royals in the finals on Monday night.

“They’ve worked hard all year for the league,” Beavers assistant coach Justin Kahl said. “We’ve had a really good season and they were pretty ecstatic to win the championship.

“[The final] was a close game right up until the last two innings. It was basically around 4-4 and then we scored a bunch of runs.”

Kahl said all year long the Beavers showed excellence both at the plate and in the field.

“The strength of our team this year has been we have a solid hitting team right from top to bottom,” he said. “We managed to put up lots of runs and our pitching has been pretty solid as well. We’ve held teams to lower scores.”

The season isn’t done yet for the Beavers, as they’ll head to Regina this upcoming weekend for the peewee AA Tier II championships.

There are eight total teams set to compete, with two pools of four. The Beavers are in pool ‘B’, joined by the Dinsmore Dynamos, the Saskatoon A’s Prospects, and the Carrot River Loggers.

“It should be fairly similar or even a little tougher than league play,” Kahl said of provincials. “With the tier system, all the teams are tiered fairly evenly, so provincials should be a fairly competitive tournament.”

The team’s first round robin game is set for Friday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. against Saskatoon, followed by games at 11:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. on Saturday. They will need to finish top-2 in their pool in the round robin to qualify for the semifinals.

All games will be played at Columbus Park.
