Adult Book Club keeps going strong over the summer

Jul 17, 2017 | 4:30 PM

It may be the middle of summer, but North Battleford Library’s monthly Adult Book Club is still going strong.

“We still have a fairly good following,” said Carla Lamontagne, reference technician and facilitator for the club, adding about five to 12 people usually take part in the group on any given night.

People who wish to participate in the book club can borrow a copy of the featured book one month in advance of the date the group meets to discuss the book

Book club meetings are held on the last Monday of each month. The next meeting is July 31.

“We have multiple copies here on a desk by the self-check-out. People can pick it up, read it, and then come on the 31st to discuss it,” Lamontagne said. “Everybody gets together and discusses what they thought of the book – good or bad.”

The book club has been running since 2013.

The last book the club covered was The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time. The club will be looking at Bride of New France by Suzanne Desrochers at its next meeting.

The new book focuses on the story of women who were recruited to travel to present-day Canada from France in the 1600s to help settle the New France area.

“It’s historical fiction. It talks about their trials and tribulations,” said Lamontagne.

In August, the club will be discussing the non-fiction piece The Ballad of Danny Wolfe by Joe Friesen.

Lamontagne said members in the club can also participate by reading e-books or listening to audio books, if the editions are available. Computer APPs are also available for library members to access the items online.

Individuals don’t need to register in advance to take part in the library’s adult book club.

“It’s just come and go,” said Lamontagne. “It’s a drop in. As long as you pick up the book, you’re welcome to come.”
