Jul 12, 2017 | 5:36 PM

Going into the final round of the Junior Men’s Provincial Golf Championships in Swift Current on Wednesday morning, North Battleford’s Kristian Houk was within one stroke of qualifying for the national championships.

Unfortunately, he shot 8 over on the day but still finished tied for 10th out of 41 golfers.

According to Golf Saskatchewan, there are a total of four quota spots up for grabs for the Canadian Junior Men’s Golf Championships in Kingston, Ont. at the end of July, with the first three going to the top three finishers at provincials. The fourth place finisher at provincials is designated as an alternate.

Tayden Wallin of Humboldt came out on top at the Chinook Players Club in Swift Current after shooting a 2-under 70 on the final day to finish with a score of 214. Last year, he was tied for seventh.

Roman Timmerman of Saskatoon (217) finished in second and Saskatoon’s Andrew Campbell (219) finished in third after beating out Estevan’s Jayden Dudas in a playoff. It was the second straight year Timmerman finished in second.

Houk had a tough first day, finishing 5 over par for the round with a score of 77, thanks to five bogeys and two double bogeys. He rebounded well on day two when he shot a 2 under 70. On the third and final day, double bogeys on the par-4 16th and par-4 18th were ultimately the difference, as he finished 8 over on the day and had a final score of 227, which was 11 over.

Last year, Houk finished 11th when he shot 24-over.

Battleford’s Colby Friedrich, who was last year’s U-15 Junior Order of Merit tour winner, also competed at provincials and finished in a tie for 16th. Like Houk, Friedrich also had a good second day sandwiched in between tough first and third rounds.

On day one, Friedrich shot an 80. On day two, he shot a 70, and on day three he shot an 83 to finish 17 over with a final score of 233.

Last year, Friedrich finished in third at the U-15 Junior Men’s Provincial Championships in Warman.

The last time a Battlefords golfer won the Junior Men’s Championships was in 2007 when Tim Acaster won in Estevan.
