Battlefords Strong BBQ aims to bring community together

Jun 24, 2017 | 8:00 AM

North Battleford businessman Shawn Wagner spent Thursday afternoon behind the barbeque grill, cooking hamburgers and hot dogs for visitors for free.

He said he wanted to do a kind gesture for the community, and thought giving away a hot lunch would be a good start.

“It’s my community and I am just trying to give back,” Wagner said. “It was the first time; I am going to try to start doing it a little more. It was a good event. We gave away a lot of food.”

Some local residents, as well as crews working on the city water main repairs, dropped in to grab a bite over the lunch hour.

The owner-operator of Armour Clean had help from his wife Nancy and staff members to fix the meals and hand out pop at his business.

Afterwards, Wagner cooked more burgers and hot dogs, in addition to what he had left over from the barbeque, and handed everything out to passersby’s on the street in downtown.

Wagner is also starting a group called Battlefords Strong and will be launching a Facebook Page for the group shortly.

“I have friends of all colour, and I am trying to bring some unity to our city,” he said. “It’s just bringing our community closer together.”

Wagner said hearing about higher crime levels and concerns about racism and divisions in the community, made him want to step out of his comfort zone.

“I’m tired of all the negative stuff in our community. There needs to be something positive,” he said. “Everybody should just do a small part to make our community better, and it will get better slowly.”
