Twins out-slug trappers in senior baseball action

Jun 23, 2017 | 10:00 AM

If you love baseball with plenty of offense, then the Ken Nelson Field was the place to be on Thursday night as the Lloydminster Twins held on to defeat the Battlefords Trappers 14-11 in Senior Men’s Baseball League action.

There was plenty of drama heading into the final innings of the contest. With the Twins leading by a 9-4 score in the bottom of the seventh, the Trappers finally got the offence rolling scoring five times in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings.

However, reliever Gavin Nolin couldn’t keep the veteran-laden Twins lineup at bay as Lloyd scored five times in the eighth to take a 14-9 lead.

The Trappers never-say-die attitude looked like it was going to re-emerge again in the bottom of the eighth when Mike George hit his second home run of the season with Mason Carriere on second to cut the lead to 14-11. Despite the effort, the Trappers could not keep the momentum as the Twins picked up the victory.

“It was a tough loss but again we showed a lot of heart,” said pitcher Mike Ross who threw two-thirds of an inning in relief. “To battle back and tie it at nine in the bottom of the seventh was a huge confidence builder.”

“We (Trappers) have proven that no lead is safe against us,” Ross added. “We put up a seven spot against Border City a few weeks ago so our offence can go toe to toe with anyone in this league.”

The Lloydminster Twins are second in the Smithson Division with a 5-3-1 while the Trappers fell to 3-7 and are in last place in the Albers Division.

The Trappers have a week off to regroup and make a push for the post season with their final six games of the season. Battleford will entertain the Meadow Lake Sox on Thursday, June 29 at the Ken Nelson Field at 7:30 p.m.
