Thompson tosses gem as trappers halt losing skid

Jun 21, 2017 | 12:00 PM

Tyrus Thompson picked a great time to record his first win of the season. The right hander gave up one run on five hits and struck out four batters in six innings to help lead the Battleford Trappers to a 5-1 win over the North Battleford Beavers in North Saskatchewan River Baseball League action last night at the Ken Nelson Field.

The victory snapped a six-game losing slide by the Trappers (3-6) who avenged a loss last week to the Beavers (5-3-1) but more importantly to Thompson puts Battleford in a position to make a strong push to the post-season.

“It was a solid team victory for sure,” said Thompson, who in seven appearances this season has a record of 1-2 with one save. “It’s a great way to kick off the second half of the season and hopefully we can build some momentum and string together several wins in a row and make a bid for the playoffs.”

The Trappers only had four hits in the game, however with the combined walks and hit batters, they were able to have men in scoring position all evening. North Battleford also committed two errors in the fifth inning which eventually led to two runs.

North Battleford starter Joey Carrier struggled (0-1) with control for most of the game giving up three earned runs and striking out four however he walked four and hit three batters in just five innings. Carrier now has walked 13 batters in just 11 innings this season.

Jared Inkster continued to swing the hot bat for the Beavers picking up a pair of hits and his seventh RBI of the season in the loss.

The Battleford Trappers will host the winless Midwest Expos (0-9) on Thursday night at 6:30 p.m. at the Ken Nelson Field followed immediately by the North Battleford Beavers hosting the Unity Cardinals (8-2) at 8:30 p.m.
