TD Summer Reading Club returning

Jun 21, 2017 | 10:00 AM

While the school year is ending soon, the local library is trying to ensure children don’t grow any cobwebs on their developing brains over the summer months.

In an effort to keep children learning, the North Battleford Public Library will be promoting reading as the TD Summer Reading Club returns this summer.

The reading club is an annual program that has been in operation nationwide for several years.

Corrine Heyden, Children’s Library Technician at the public library, mentioned how important it is for children to read over the summer.

“Reading loss over the summer can mean that kids can drop up to two grade levels,” Heyden said. “If they continue reading all summer, they can actually improve their skills and be better prepared for September when school starts up again.”

The library will also be hosting a reading program called “Reading across Canada” for teens and adults as well, with a focus on Canadian literature from every province and territory in the country.

“We want to celebrate Canada… promote Canadian content, and just let people know that we’ve got a lot of really awesome things that happen [here],” Heyden said. “We’ve got some really intriguing history that’s great to explore, and Canadian authors are very creative.”

The club kicks off its first day of registration with an event on June 24 at 1 p.m. at the library, and will have a variety of activities including a scavenger hunt and green screen photo booth.
