In honour of loved ones who have passed away, Sallows and McDonald Wilson Zehner Funeral Home hosted their fifth annual balloon release on Father’s Day.
“The annual balloon release is basically an invitation to families that we’ve served in the past,” Wally Markewich said, location manager of Sallows and McDonald Wilson Zehner Funeral Home. “This just kind of symbolizes a time, especially when it’s getting close to Father’s Day or Mother’s Day...that we don’t forget about our families after their service.”
“It’s part of a way of us as a community, and a funeral home,...of taking care of the people we serve.”
The event featured a short program with scripture, a free barbecue, and a donation box. All donations collected went towards causes such as the families who lost their homes in the fires on Centennial Dr. on June 8.
The funeral home also provided carnations for the attendees as well.
“If they’re going to visit their loved one’s grave [during the event], they can place it on their grave,” Markewich said. “It’s a way for us to give back to the community.”
Each year the balloon release has been in operation, the event has seen 50 to 100 attendees. This year saw over 100 people.
