Kids learn the ABC’s of bike safety

Battlefords youth had a chance to finesse their road-safety skills at the popular Bike Rodeo this week.

North Battleford students in Grades 1 to 5 participated in the Friday training session inside the Civic Centre, while town of Battleford students attended a separate event Tuesday.

The free event was put on by a number of partners including the local RCMP, first responders, the fire departments and local community safety officers, with added support from fire cadets who volunteered their time. The event was open to students at schools throughout the Battlefords.

“Kids are almost done school and they are going to be outside,” Battlefords RCMP Const. Jane Kenny said. “There is a lot of traffic on the roads so we want to teach kids about the importance of wearing a helmet, and safety on the roads.”

At the Bike Rodeo in North Battleford Friday, students took part in a six-point obstacle course while they received instruction from the safety experts.

Students learned how to use hand signals when turning or stopping on their bikes, as well as the importance of a proper fitting helmet.

Experts were on hand checking to ensure the students’ bikes are in good, safe working condition.

The students also were taught to come to a full stop at all intersections.

Kenny said the youth learned about the importance of being aware of vehicles on the road when they are outside biking around the neighbourhood.

“We’re teaching kids about road safety, about signs and lights,” she said, adding children also need to be sure to walk their bikes across the road to be safe, when they come to a lighted intersection.

Kenny said organizers have had a “phenomenal success” with the Bike Rodeo program this year.

More than 230 students took part in the town of Battleford event, while more than 150 students participated in the morning session at the North Battleford event, and many more were expected for the afternoon course.

Some local businesses donated bikes and helmets for a number of prize give-a-ways, as part of the Bike Rodeo event.
