After the Bell returns to playgrounds this summer

Jun 14, 2017 | 11:33 AM

For the second summer in a row, the Battlefords District Food and Resource Centre will be teaming up with the City of North Battleford Parks and Recreation Department for After the Bell which distributes bags of food to children who use the supervised park program during the summer months.

The program is an initiative of Food Banks Canada.

Erin Katerynych, Executive Director of the Battlefords District Food and Resource Centre said the campaign was a huge success last year.

“We had many happy stories come out of it last summer,” Katerynych said. “A lot of the food handed out the children had never tried before and most of them enjoyed what they received.”

Items in the food pack included oatmeal packets, hummus and crackers, granola bars, apple sauce and fruit cups.

Jocelyne Paulhus, with the North Battleford Parks and Recreation Department said After the Bell was well received by the children.

“I would take the items to the playground you could see the children running to see what they were getting that day,” Paulhus said. “It was great seeing them try healthy foods that perhaps they had never tried before.”

Paulhus described one instance when they introduced a new fruit to the children.

“Normally we get apples, oranges and bananas,” she added. “One day, I got some plums and they children looked surprised and asked what they were. Many of them had never seen a plum before so that means a lot to me.”

Paulhus stated that on average, After the Bell provides food for 50 to 60 children between the ages of six to twelve on a weekly basis.

After the Bell will run in North Battleford July 5 to August 23.
