Lakeland Veterinary Services presents donation to humane society

Jun 6, 2017 | 12:00 PM

For every goal the Battlefords North Stars scored this past season, Lakeland Veterinary Services would donate $5 to the Battlefords Humane Society.

As it turns out, the league champions found the back of the net 223 times this year, which resulted in a $1,115 donation.

On Tuesday morning, Lakeland owner and veterinarian Shawn Haas presented the cheque to humane society shelter coordinator Michelle Spark.

The money will go towards the new building fund.

“We want to be able to house more than what we’re housing but I think the goal is more to able to move animals in a healthier, safer way as far as viruses and keeping disease under control,” Spark said on the morning show with Grant Schutte. “Right now we can house about 25 dogs and probably about 50 cats comfortably, which we’re always over capacity.”

Haas added taking care of animals is a huge concern for a large portion of the population.

“Providing adquate care to animals [has] become more and more of a challenge,” Haas said. “Certainly, we see more issues with a wide variety of neglect and abuse that we need to try to handle.”

Spark said right now the humane society is still raising money for the new building and they’re currently at about $460,000. The goal listed on the website is $999,999, so there is still a ways to go.
