Crystal Shawanda to play at the Dekker Centre

Jun 5, 2017 | 12:32 PM

Award-winning country artist, Crystal Shawanda, is making a stop at the Dekker Centre later on this week.

Shawanda is from the Wikwemikong First Nation on Manitoulin Island, and has toured with big names in country including Dierks Bentley.

Additionally, she has also performed at Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade; the world’s largest parade based out of New York City broadcasted nationally in the United States.

Shawanda describes her music as soulful country but has also released a blues album in the past.

This will be the second time Shawanda has performed in the Battlefords, as she performed at the Gold Eagle Casino Events Centre in 2014, and said she always looks forward to playing in Saskatchewan as she has several old friends from the area.

“I absolutely love [Saskatchewan], it [has a] gorgeous countryside,” Shawanda said. “I’ve been touring for years now, and every time we go across Canada it’s one of my favourite places.

“I always have wonderful support when I go to Saskatchewan, and it’s always a great time.”

During the show, Shawanda said the audience can expect a little bit of everything at the show. She plans to perform a few songs off of each of her albums with a highlight of her latest release, and also some oldies and some of today’s top 40s.

“It’s definitely a high energy show, and [will be] an emotional rollercoaster,” she said. “We have those songs that make you want to dance and sing along, and we have those songs that might bring a tear to your eye. It’s a little bit of life all rolled into one show.”

Shawanda’s show will begin at 8 p.m. on Thursday, June 8. Tickets are $40, and are available at the Dekker Centre box office.
