CPCA: Day 1 recap

Jun 3, 2017 | 8:25 AM

The Canadian Professional Chuckwagon Association made the first stop of its race circuit in North Battleford Friday night.

Though a thunderstorm watch was in place, it cleared up just in time for the races and didn’t dampen the spirits of fans as they braved the weather and packed the stands.

Shortly before the event, the Battlefords saw just enough rain to dampen the racetrack and prevent dust from kicking up during.

Despite an early heat delay, things appeared to be holding up. But later in the evening, just as the race began, one of the outrider’s horses was spooked and kicked its rider in the face.

The rider suffered some injuries but still managed to calm his horse down and finish his heat. However, upon completion, he was escorted in the ambulance for medical attention.

This tied up the action, as races could not continue until another ambulance was present.

Once the replacement ambulance arrived, the remainder of the eleven heats were completed.

After it was all said and done, Jamie Laboucane took the Day 1 lead with 36 points and a total time of 1:03:11.

Kris Molle was not far back at 1:04:46 and 35 points, and Ray Mitsuing is hot on his heels with 1:04:48 on the clock and 34 points.

Wagan action continues Saturday at 6:30 p.m. with the finals hitting the track Sunday at 2 p.m.
