Bantam draft to kick off SJHL AGM

Jun 1, 2017 | 5:00 PM

The Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League 2017 annual general meeting is set for the coming days, which means the bantam draft is quickly approaching.

Now in its third year, the draft will kick off the AGM at 10 a.m. on Friday, June 2 where players born in 2002 that are born in Saskatchewan are eligible to be picked.

But not just any players.

Each club has a 50-player protected list that includes their main roster and younger prospects in their ‘system’. In addition to the list, there is an “Auto-Protect B List.” This is for players who hail from within the boundaries of an SJHL team and they remain protected by their home team until their 17th birthday.

That means players chosen in the bantam draft must not be on any team’s Auto-Protect B List when they completed playing at the bantam level.

The North Stars have five picks in the six-round draft, but their highest pick isn’t until the third round, at 32nd overall.

Their first-round pick (12th overall) was moved to La Ronge in the Jared Blaquiere and Zach Nedelec acquisition and this year’s second round pick (24th overall) was sent to Weyburn at last year’s draft to acquire an additional pick at the time.

The picks Battlefords does have is 32nd overall, 36th, 48th, 60th, and 72nd.

In the later rounds, picks are often passed on because the bantam draft is simply an opportunity to add players to your protected list and there must be room for every player selected.

Other notes on agenda

SJHL commissioner Bill Chow has said league discipline and the annual showcase will also be talked about during the AGM. This is in addition to schedule talk getting underway, which happens every year, although that won’t be fully hammered out until later in June.

The showcase is set to return to Warman once again at the end of September, according to an article published on the league website last week.

Discipline could be a hot topic as well, at least for some teams, as very little on suspensions is actually written out on the league website and there’s no doubt the process could use some work.
