Community of Mervin among Sask. Baseball Hall of Fame inductees

May 30, 2017 | 2:00 PM

This upcoming August, 12 individuals, two teams, two communities, and one family will be officially inducted into the Saskatchewan Baseball Hall of Fame (SBHOF), with the village of Mervin among them.

Joining Mervin in the community category is the Hohenlohe School District.

A press release from the SBHOF said baseball in Mervin dates all the way back to 1913.

Teams of note over the years include the Highway 55 team, the Mervin Legionnaires juvenile team that won the league championship for five straight years in the 1950s, and the Mervin Flyers senior team that was one of the original teams in the North Saskatchewan River Baseball League that formed in 1974.

“All this would not have been possible without the support of the parents and all the people from around the community of Mervin and district,” the SBHOF press release said of Mervin’s selection. “The mothers spent hours sewing uniforms, scorekeeping and managing the booth as part of raising money for the team. The fathers gave of their time coaching, managing, umpiring and caring for the ball diamond.”

In the team cateogry, the Wawota Pats and the 1936-1938 Broadview Buffaloes will be inducted.

“The community of Wawota has had senior level baseball since 1915 with the exception of the war years,” a press release on the Pats selection said. “The team had many players over the years with their most successful years found competing in many tournaments in three different senior leagues.”

The Woodard family from Colgate, Sask. will be inducted in the family category. They immigrated from Minnesota to the Weyburn, Sask., area in 1903.

“The Woodard Family dedicated and contributed 112 years to our rich Saskatchewan baseball history and to the development of our great province of Saskatchewan,” a press release on the family’s selection said.

The 12 individuals to be inducted are: Don W. Anderson of Moose Jaw, Garry Anderson of Medicine Hat, Alta., Norman Arngrimson (deceased) of Mozart, Sask., John N. Batey (deceased) of Macklin, Sask., Cliff Campbell of Castor, Alta., Robert Faith of Fafleche, Sask., Jim Fink of Regina, Jamie Flanagan of Kindersley, Sask., Garnet Hansen of Weyburn, Sask., Al Herback of Chestermere, Alta., Ross Mahoney of Regina, and Don Pankewich of Regina.

The 34th annual induction ceremony will take place on August 19 at the Alex Dillabough Centre in Battleford.
