North Battleford is being touted as one of the top art towns across Canada in a recent online article in Expedia’s travel blog.

“I think it’s exciting, and it’s honest,” Mayor Ryan Bater said. “We have a very strong arts community.”

He added as the article, Top Art Towns in Canada, indicates the performing arts in particular is “very strong” in North Battleford where the Dekker Centre for the Performing Arts often features upcoming and veteran talent.

“We just hosted TheatreFest for the entire province of Saskatchewan last month in April to rave reviews,” Bater added. “We have a tremendous performing arts theatre – the Dekker Centre for the Performing Arts. And, of course we have two public art galleries – the Chapel Gallery and the Allen Sapp Gallery.”

The article featured North Battleford as one of the top art’s destinations in the category for medium-sized towns, based on its population of 13,888.

“We punch above our weight certainly in terms of how big we are as a community,” the mayor said. “People here in North Battleford are not lacking for outlets. We are very proud to offer all of that to people who visit here and who live here. People can experience the kind of leisure, recreation or artistic endeavors that one would expect in a much bigger city like Saskatoon or Regina.”

Bater added in terms of attracting visitors to the area to enjoy art attractions, North Battleford has a full bounty to enjoy.

“We also have a lot to offer in terms of local people having an outlet for artistic endeavours. That is something that is very, very important to us,” he said.

In addition to having the Battlefords Allied Arts Council to support the arts, the area also has a range of organized groups to encourage an individual’s choice of artistic expression – whether that is the photography club, dance associations or the Battlefords’ Community Players theatre group.

“Whatever one’s interest, there is likely a local group. They are well organized and very strong. They offer a lot for people to participate in,” Bater said.
