Drunk drivers, thefts keep RCMP busy

May 23, 2017 | 4:48 PM

Battlefords RCMP members were kept on their toes over the long weekend responding to a total of 331 calls for service, for everything from impaired driving and traffic offences, to thefts.

From Friday morning to Tuesday morning, police dealt with a total of 81 driving-related cases, seven of which were related to dangerous driving and 12 impaired driving offences. Officers handed out 56 tickets for driving infractions.

“It is that time of year again when everyone is getting out and enjoying the weather. Please slow down, drive safe and plan a safe ride home if you are drinking,” Cpl. James Fenrich said in a media release.

Police responded to six vehicle collisions and Fenrich said there were “no major injuries” involved.

Fenrich said break-in reports also kept police on the go. He said these “crimes of opportunity” often involved culprits breaking into residents’ vehicles and helping themselves to the contents.

“A lot of the time vehicles were left insecure and the keys were left in the vehicles,” Fenrich said. “Houses were being left insecure, doors not locked, windows not locked. Due to the nice weather, windows are left open, doors are left open, and what happens is [they become] crimes of opportunity for the people who are committing these crimes.”

He recommended residents try to protect their valuables by keeping them hidden at all times.

“That includes locking vehicle keys out of sight, even inside your residence, [and] not leaving your [vehicle] keys hanging by the front door,” he said.

If anyone has any information about any of the above crimes they can call Saskatchewan Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) to make an anonymous report, or call their local RCMP detachment.
