Connaught youngsters enjoy community garden

May 20, 2017 | 8:43 AM

While they may not have the green thumb for gardening quite yet, the Battlefords Family Health Centre (BFHC) Community Garden Project coordinators believe it’s never too early to learn.

Recently, students from Connaught Elementry School in Miss Raelyn Favel kindergarten and Mr. Les Morin’s Grade 1 and two classes took part in the Growing, Sowing and Blooming project celebrating its tenth season in North Battleford.

“The students really enjoy the outdoor education side of being involved with the Community Garden,” Rose Favel BFHC Community Garden coordinator said. “Plus, they enjoy playing in the soil with worms and catching lady bugs too.”

The Community Garden Project has grown significantly in the decade.

“When we started we had one site and 13 plots,” Favel remembered. “This year we have three sites and over 60 plots.”

The students also participated in the “Project of Heart” garden by planting flowers in the form of a heart to honour residential school survivors.

This year the students planted tomatoes, strawberries and an assortment of vegetables and were happy to see some plants break through the soil this week.

Favel said the project is not just for children and everyone is welcome to get involved.

“We turn no one away,” Favel said.”Regardless of your gardening skills, everyone is welcome to be a part of our garden.”

To get involved in the Community Garden Project drop by the office of the Battlefords Family Health Centre.
