Old Mosaic Stadium to be demolished in 2017 or 2018

It’s out with the old Mosaic Stadium and in with the new.

As events ramp up at the new facility – including concerts and a professional soccer game – some attention is turning to the old barn.

The city said there is a tender out for a contractor for the decommission of the old Mosaic Stadium.

“We’re going to see who’s qualified, who wants to work on the decommission and the demolition of the facility itself,” Mayor Michael Fougere told the CJME Morning Show Tuesday.

“We’re still looking at how we’ll auction off or sell various parts of the stadium.”

Things like screens and seats will be sold off. But some things belong to the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

“A lot of the seats will be used by the Riders,” Fougere explained. “It was part of their legacy project when we had Grey Cup here in 2013.”

Money from parts belonging to the city won’t go to the general revenue fund, according to Fougere. He said it will go to another reserve fund used for maintenance of the facility, among other things.

Fougere said demolition of old Mosaic will happen either this year or next. Whenever it does begin, he asks people not to try and help.

“It might be difficult and dangerous,” he said. “As we begin to decommission and pull pieces of the stadium away, it becomes more dangerous to be inside.”
