North Stars season comes to an end after loss to Vees

May 6, 2017 | 6:17 PM

The Battlefords North Stars season is over.

The Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League champions fell 4-0 to the Penticton Vees on Saturday afternoon at the Western Canada Cup in the third versus fourth playoff game.

Battlefords squeaked into the playoff round with a 1-2-1 record, while the Vees were 2-1-1.

The Vees power play went 2-for-8 in the game, including 2-for-2 on their first two attempts. They got goals from Taylor Ward, Massimo Rizzo, Jared Nash, and Grant Cruikshank.

Joel Grzybowski was phenomenal yet again for the visitors, making 34 saves.

The North Stars couldn’t buy a goal, as Mat Robson shut the door on all 23 shots he saw, many of which were high quality scoring opportunities.

The end of the season means the end of the junior hockey careers for eight North Stars: Jared Blaquiere, Reed Delainey, Coby Downs, Kendall Fransoo, Keaton Holinaty, Connor Logan, Logan Nachtegaele, and Zach Nedelec.

Two of them have already secured scholarships to play college hockey next season as Delainey will head to the Rochester Institute of Technology and Downs will head to Norwich.

It’s quite possible the others will secure college spots in the coming weeks.

BattlefordsNOW wishes all eight good luck in their future endeavours and once again congratulates the North Stars on their championship season as well.

More to come.
