Region shines as Sask’s best

The first Best of Saskatchewan awards shed some much deserved light on the best of what the province has to offer.

More than 205,000 votes were cast to find the best of the best in a number of categories from food and drink, nightlife, entertainment and politicians. Although Prince Albert scooped up the majority of awards, the region was still well represented.

These two awards should come as no surprise to anyone – Gordie Howe took first place as the best Saskatchewan hero and the year’s dumbest political move was the election of Donald Trump. 

On the political side, Premier Brad Wall’s approval rating appears strong as he took best Saskatchewan premier ever and best Saskatchewan elected official. The best Saskatchewan mayor went to Prince Albert’s own Greg Dionne.

Melfort’s Mund’s Family Fashions took home the best clothing store for both men and women. Saskatoon won the best day trip while Tobin Lake and Montreal Lake won best places to fish. Hague’s Shell won best bakery.

The best appliance store went to Tisdale’s Northeast Appliance Plus while Yuen’s Cellular Centre in Humboldt took first place in the best electronics store category. Shellbrook’s Bigway Foods was voted the best grocery store in the province.

O’Shea’s Irish Pub in Saskatoon has bragging rights as best patio spot.

P.A. snagged a number of big categories including best radio personality, Lew Harrison for XFM, best Saskatchewan media personality, Don Mitchell for 900 CKBI and best morning radio team, Lew Harrison and Kelly Taylor also for XFM.

Dr. Java was voted the number one spot to get a coffee as well as best coffee shop, best lunch and best sandwich or sub shop. The best place for a cappuccino went to Mystic Java in Saskatoon.

On of the education side, the best elementary school teacher went to Red Ring School’s Stacy Ward while Carlton Comprehensive High School’s Karen Grassick took home the best high school teacher award. St. Mary High School won the top spot for best school.

The city’s Conexus Credit Union was voted the best place to work in the province and Shananigan’s Coffee and Dessert Bar was ranked the top spot to take a date. The best make out spot turns out to be Little Red River Park. Oddly enough, the park is also the best place to break up in addition to hiking.

Waskesiu Lake took numerous awards including best place to take out of town guests, best park or public space, the best place to take kids, best beach and best lake.

Although not all the winners can be included here, it should be noted that paNOW‘s own Teena Monteleone was voted the best news reporter while the site itself won best Saskatchewan website.

Ed. Note: Vesper Miller has been chosen as the winner of a weekend at the Elk Ridge Resort, including a $300 gift card. The prize was given for voting in at least 15 categories.
