Chamber planning trip to China

Apr 25, 2017 | 5:00 PM

Some of the local Chamber of Commerce members soon may be packing their bags for China, if any of them take advantage of the opportunity to travel with the group.

Battlefords chamber president Warren Williams said while it is not a business-trip, Chamber members who choose to take part in the trip planned for April 2018 will have an opportunity to get to know other chamber members throughout Saskatchewan who are also taking part.

The local chamber introduced the invitation to members at its recent meeting. The Saskatchewan Chamber of Commerce is promoting the venture, as part of a province-wide initiative.

“It’s much like joining a service club,” said Williams. “It creates opportunities to meet people and interact with them on a more personal level, and increase your area of influence and circle of social development.”

Williams said while the chamber doesn’t provide any funding for members to take part in the trip, the cost for the voyage is reasonable.

He describes the China trip package as a perk for members belonging to the local chamber.

“Anytime you are going abroad, or frankly anywhere as a group under a certain banner, it creates opportunities for relationships,” he said.

Mayors address

The local chamber is currently busy organizing the sixth annual “State of the Town and City Address” meeting between the mayors of the City of North Battleford and the Town of Battleford on May 16 at the Western Development Museum in North Battleford.

“The purpose is to allow our mayors the opportunity to address at the same time a lot of chamber members, business leaders, even citizens of our community, to given an update on where the city and the town are at right at the moment,” said Williams of the event that is open to the public.

Talking money

This week the chamber is involved in helping in the schools. It will be giving a talk to Grade 7 students at a number of Battlefords schools on April 26, to help youth learn more about the business of managing money. The chamber president will also be speaking to students at one of the schools taking part in the event.

“It’s a good program to encourage our kids to use their money wisely,” said Williams.
