AAA Stars hold annual awards banquet

Battlefords AAA Stars held their end of year banquet this past weekend to thank the coaching staff, billets, family and volunteers, as well as hand out individual player awards for the season.

Goaltender Lance Alm took home MVP and most dedicated player, as he saw by far the most shots in the league this season and made a whopping 1,127 saves in 33 games. The next highest save total from any goaltender in the league was 994.

The coaches award went to graduating team captain Tyson Meyers, while the Welykochy Award, given to a player who balances hockey, school and good citizenship, when to defenceman Donavon Beatty.

The top defenceman award went to 15-year-old Luke Reid, who finished top-10 in scoring among defenceman in the league with 23 points in 39 games. Reid also had the best plus-minus this season.

The rookie of the year award went to the team’s top scorer Adam Beckman, who’s 41 points were the fifth-most among rookies league wide and tied for 15th among all players, regardless of age.

The Stars named Dylan Esau the most improved player and Mathew Flodell the most underrated player.

There are a total of nine graduating players who won’t be returning next season due to age: Beatty, Meyers, Dayton Buchanan, MacKenzie Donovan, Parker Gavlas, Jordan Mish, Connor Nagel, Michael Puglia, and Jaden Shewchuk, 

Stars spring camp took place this past weekend with over 100 players and head coach Norm Johnston was excited with what he saw. The team was essentially chosen and they will reconvene Sept. 3.
