Dispose of household hazardous material this weekend

Apr 20, 2017 | 6:00 AM

Disposing of hazardous waste is not only good for the environment, but it keeps city employees safe.

This Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. city staff is asking residents to bring any hazardous materials to the Public Works Shop, which is across from Home Hardware.

According to the city’s environment manager, Tammy MacCormick, if hazardous materials aren’t disposed of properly, they can cause some pretty serious safety issues for employees working at North Battleford’s Waste Management Facility.

“The danger particularly lies in aerosols like hair sprays and insect repellent, MacCormick said. “When employees drive over them in their equipment, the cans can explode.”

MacCormick added there is the enviornmental aspect as well. If hazardous materials leak into the waste managerment faciltiy it can be a very costly process to clean the ground. MacCormick said regular testing is done and the landfill is monitored to avoid a serious situation.

The city holds two Household Hazardous Waste Days a year with the first being in the spring. MacCormick said the second, and perhaps the most important one, is held in the fall for people to dispose of all their pesticides, car maintenance products and waste from other summer hobbies, especially those that require gasoline or oil.

According to MacCormick, there are certain things they won’t accept this Saturday. Batteries, florescent bulbs and mercury thermostats won’t be accepted but can be brought to city hall any time of the year for free.

For a full list of what is and isn’t accepted and where to properly dispose of waste check the city’s website.
