Apr 6, 2017 | 2:00 PM

It’s been a terrific few weeks for the Battlefords North Stars and its players.

The Stars rolled into the SJHL playoffs with the best overall record in the league (48-9-1-0). They quickly disposed of the Weyburn Red Wings in four games in the first round, and on Tuesday night completed their second straight series sweep beating the Estevan Bruins. This is the team’s first appearance in the Canalta Cup finals since 2006.

The Stars will now wait for the victor of the Nipawin Hawks-Flin Flon Bombers series to see who they will face in the SJHL championship.

On top of all that, this week four members of the Stars have garnered league awards.

Forward Coby Downs was recognized as the RBC Player of the month for March after amassing 16 points in seven regular season and playoff combined games. He currently leads the SJHL playoff scoring race with 20 points.

Defenceman Connor Sych has been a calming influence on the North Stars back end this season, stepping up even more since the injury to Kendall Fransoo in February. He has also contributed offensively in March with eight points in seven games was named as the IBAS Defenseman of the Month for his efforts.

Two Stars were also recipients of weekly honors in the SJHL. Sniper Layne Young had 10 points in the four game semi-final sweep of the Estevan Bruins. Young trails Coby Downs by two points in the race for the playoff scoring lead.

Owen Lamb was honored as the SJHL rookie of the week thanks to three points in the first two games of the Bruins series. The North Battleford youngster has six points in eight playoff games so far.
