Sask. MP draws national attention for views on gay people

A Saskatoon MP – and Conservative Party leadership hopeful – will not apologize for his views on gay people.

Brad Trost, member for Saskatoon-University, told BuzzFeed he stands by the comments made on his behalf in a campaign video released Tuesday.

The video features campaign spokesperson Mike Pattonhighlighting Trost’s stance on gay pride parades.

“In case you haven’t noticed, Brad’s not entirely comfortable with the whole gay thing. And if you haven’t noticed, you haven’t been paying attention,” Patton said.

“What you do in private is your business. What you literally do, in the middle of the street, needs to conform to some basic community standards.”

In the video, Patton also talks about Trost’s criticism of other leadership candidates who have attended pride events.

“Brad’s concern is that parts of the gay pride parade have become so overly sexualized. Behaviour which is so inappropriate for public viewing,” Patton said. 

The comments follow a fundraising email in which Trost pledged never to attend gay pride parades or events.

The conservative MP has responded to questions about the video by stating gay sex is immoral, adding he won’t apologize for his views.

Trost is one of 14 candidates vying to become the next leader of the Conservative Party of Canada.
