The best amateur singers and Red River jiggers from across Saskatchewan descended on the Battlefords recently to compete in Pride of the Northwest XVII at the Gold Eagle Casino.

“This year’s competition was the best yet,” Shane Fluney of Gold Eagle Casino told battlefordsNOW. “The array of talent was just incredible and of course the huge prize money up for grabs was a bonus as well.”

The competition opened with the preliminaries on Feb. 25 while the finals were held on Saturday.

Ten thousand dollars in total prize money was awarded to the winners.

The women’s finalists in the Red River Jigging competition were Ashla Michel, Jocelyn Linklater and Neanna Sasakamoose from Prince Albert and Alana Dorion and Courtney Anaquod from Saskatoon.

The men’s finalists included North Battlefords Denis Delorme while Coleman Bull of Little Pine and Levi Highway of Saskatoon, Adam Charles of Grandmother’s Bay and Clint Sanderson of Beauval took home top honours.

“We had some incredible vocal performances throughout the competition,” Fluney noted. “The judges really had a tough time deciding on the winner on both the men’s and women’s side.”

North Battleford’s Brent Nixon was among the winners on the men’s side with Rosthern’s Kiefer Paul and David Ratzlaff, Matthew Pederson of Buffalo Narrows and Joel Bergen of Saskatoon garnering prize money while Lovina Tootosis of North Battleford, Bernadette Wolfe of Saskatoon, Erin Aubichon of Île-à-la-Crosse and sisters Jenelle and Sarah George of Pierceland capturing the division.

Fluney said all performances can be viewed on the Gold Eagle Casino Facebook page which to date have been viewed over 450,000 times from all over North America.
