Fireman’s Ball fundraising for NWC students

Mar 19, 2017 | 12:00 PM

The first-ever fireman’s ball in the Battlefords promises to be a night of fun and glamour, which will also raise funds for local college students.

North West College (NWC) has partnered with the International Association of Fire Fighters, Local 1756 to put on its first Fireman’s Ball. Organizers are hoping the event will add to the scholarship fund for both the North Battleford and Meadow Lake campuses, along with aiding the local fire department’s Charity Fund.

According to Kendra Rowswell, marketing and communications officer for NWC, it will be a fun and formal event, giving people a chance to dress up.

“There’s not very many times that we get to really dress up and go for an evening out with either your friends or your spouse, so that was kind of the goal, to be that formal night out.” Roswell said. “The firefighters will all be dressed in their tunics, so they’ll be dressed up and looking really fantastic too.”

Roswell said any student can apply for the scholarships funded by the ball.

“The fundraiser in particular funds a program called ‘Choose North West College’ where every student that applies and comes into a post-secondary program receives money just for coming here,” she said. “It’s kind of that bridge to help our students pay for their education and not come out with a ton of student debt at the end.”

Rowswell said every student who applied for the scholarship this year by the deadline received funding.

“The way that it works is, depending on availability of funds, we go down a list,” she said. “So depending on what your average is, your entrance average coming in, depends on how much money you receive, and this year there was no cut off right to the very bottom of that academic average.”

Along with the college, a quarter of the what’s raised will go into the union charity fund, which is mainly donated to the Saskatchewan burn fund, but also helps other local charities of the department’s choosing.

The event will be held at the Gold Ridge Centre March 31, and tickets will be available until they sell out.
