Thespians across Sask. coming to Battlefords this spring

Mar 2, 2017 | 9:00 AM

Acting groups from across the province will come to compete in the Battlefords this spring.

The Dekker Centre will host Theatrefest, a week-long competitive festival April 24 to 29.

The event will celebrate 85 years of community theatre in the province. Locally, the Battlefords Community Players are also celebrating 65 consecutive years of live theatre to the Battlefords area.

“It’s wonderful to have this competition back here in North Battleford,” Donna Challis, chair of the festival committee, said. “We have a wonderful venue now in the Dekker Centre to host the event and some great groups coming to perform so it’s going to be a great week of live theatre.”

Theatrefest 2017 will feature theatre troupes from Melfort, Regina, Swift Current and Cochin.

“This year’s event will also feature a new twist,” Challis added. “To celebrate Canada’s 150th anniversary we asked all the groups to choose Canadian writers. There is such an array of gifted authors to choose from and I think the plays each group selected are superb.”

The Battleford Community Players will begin the competition on Monday April 24 with Of the Fields, Lately, David French’s tale of Ben Mercer who returns home for a family funeral to find his father ailing and the conflict begins.

“This is a great play,” Challis said. “David French is one of those writers who can intertwine tragic situations with comedy. It’s a terrific performance to kick off the festival.”

The theatre groups and performers will be competing for one of the many awards including Best Play, Best Actor, Best Actress and Best Director.

The six-show package costs $80 plus taxes or $20 for single show admission. Tickets are available at the Dekker Centre box office and online at the Dekker Centre and Theatre Saskatchewan websites.
