Wintertainment hosts kids’ street hockey

Feb 25, 2017 | 3:00 PM

The lack of ice didn’t stop some of Battlefords’ upcoming hockey players from taking part in a game.

At the second last Wintertainment Week event, several Battlefords Minor Hockey initiation teams consisting of five- and six-year-olds hit the pavement for some street hockey action.

The event was originally planned for the ice, but warmer weather forced organizers to make a last minute adjustment to the event.

According to coach Jordan Solomko, the kids didn’t seem to care about the difference.

“It’s great,” Solomko said. “I was a little skeptical on the street hockey, but the kids are having a blast.”

A road behind Connaught Elementary School was sectioned off for the event, and spectators enjoyed hot dogs and hot chocolate around fire pits.

The street hockey was the second-last event before the end of Wintertainment Week, which has been running since Feb. 19. The final event, hosted at the North Battleford Public Library from 1 to 3 p.m., will feature a treasure hunt, hot chocolate and crafts.
