Stony Rapids drowning prompts external investigation

Feb 25, 2017 | 1:11 PM

Stony Rapids RCMP requested an external investigation after an incident this morning which may have resulted in the drowning of a fleeing suspect.

At approximately 5:15 a.m. Stony Rapids RCMP responded to a complaint at a residence in the community. When officers arrived, an adult male who was related to the complaint fled police on foot.

According to the RCMP report, the suspect “ended up in a body of water and disappeared beneath the surface.” Efforts to locate the suspect were unsuccessful, and RCMP said they believe he drowned.

RCMP requested an independent, external investigation into the incident to ensure impartiality, and asked the Ministry of Justice to appoint an independent observer. The investigation will be taken over by the Prince Albert Police.
