Wintertainment to hold outdoor hockey game

Feb 17, 2017 | 10:02 AM

There’s nothing quite like outdoor hockey in the middle of winter, and although the weather isn’t what it should be, that’s not stopping Wintertainment from holding their first ever outdoor hockey game.

On Saturday, Feb. 25, the Wintertainment Outdoor Classic will see Battlefords Minor Hockey Association (BMHA) initiation teams play in two games at Connaught Elementary School’s outdoor rink.

“Kids don’t get to play hockey outdoors as much as they used to, it seems,” said Candace Dustan, Wintertainment director. “We just thought it would be cool to give them the opportunity to play a game outside with an audience.”

The initiation age for BMHA is ages four to seven.

Dustan said having a son that plays initiation helped her come up with the idea.

“Everybody likes watching the little guys,” she said. “I had the idea last year as an add-on to Wintertainment for this year. So there happened to be an extra day in the schedule so I put it in there.”

To make sure the ice is ready to go, there will be a flood the night before, as well as the morning of. The games will be played at 1 p.m. and 2:30 p.m.

But if the weather doesn’t hold up, there is a back-up plan.

“In case the weather doesn’t cool down, which is bizarre for Februrary, we will be playing floor hockey in the gym,” Dustan said. “The school has been really great to work with. They’ve offered us use of the school as well for washrooms and the gym.”

The event is free, plus there will be a free wiener roast, hot chocolate and even an appearance from Leisure Lee the mascot, who will be playing snow soccer and other activities.

“It’s open to everybody,” Dustan said. “There will be bleachers for seating, feel free to bring your own chairs.”
