New grief support group starting in N.B.

Jan 18, 2017 | 11:00 AM

A new seminar and support group is starting this week in North Battleford to help those dealing with grief.

Sharing Grief’s Journey is an eight-week seminar and support group aimed at helping those who have lost a loved one. It begins on Jan. 19 at the Living Faith Chapel, but it is a non-denominational seminar.

Organizer Wendy Barker spent over 25 years as a public health nurse in the area and she saw first-hand the degree to which grief effects people’s lives.

“I’ve always had an interest in it. In the nursing professional you see so much grief, I just knew there was a way I could help,” said Barker.

“I went to a conference in Saskatoon and they keynote speaker was from Halifax and she was talking about this Grief Share Video series. I tracked down the series and started working on putting the idea in motion.”

The seminar is sponsored by the Battleford’s Ministerial Association and deals with topics such the challenges of grief, normal grief, guilt and anger and grief and relationships.

Each session is 90 minutes long and includes a video seminar, plus an opportunity to interact with others who have experienced loss.

“I like this series because it deals with spiritual side of grieving however we do not force the spiritualism on any one. We are a non-denominational group and respect everyone’s faith,” Barker pointed out.

The eight-week seminar runs every Thursday night beginning at 7:30 p.m. and is free to everyone.
