Puppets on display at N.B. artist centre

Cultures from around the world are on display in North Battleford, all in the form of puppets.

Puppets and Imagination, Traditions from Around the World is the latest exhibit on display at ARC Creative Studios in the city’s downtown. The show features more than 50 puppets from nine different countries, including some made locally.

Turkey, Greece, Vietnam and Burma are a few of the countries represented by puppets at the gallery, with some pieces dating back as far as the 1920s.

Curator Sherron Burns said the inspiration for the exhibit came from a desire to hang on to her own playfulness, curiosity and imagination.

“It really connects me back to my own childhood, so there’s something that draws me back to puppets and the things that you can play with or animate,” Burns said.

“Any kind of object can be animated and given a voice, given a breath, given some life, and to me that creates [a] story very magically and naturally,” she said. “[It’s] something anybody can do. It’s been a long-time fascination that I’ve had.”

Burns said she is tentatively planning to host a puppet workshop in the spring in order to give the community more hands-on experience with the art, something she said ARC tries to do regularly.

“We are really committed to bringing art to the community. We have lots of events where we’re bringing community in, often for free to do workshops,” she said. “We’ve had open mics here, we’ve had music performances and we’ve done a shadow play here.”

Puppets and Imagination will be on display until the end of February.
