Meota senior hockey team hosting New Year’s bash

Dec 30, 2016 | 4:00 PM

A local hockey team is throwing a New Years Eve bash to raise funds for their squad, which they promise will be the best party around.

The 3rd annual Meota Combines senior hockey team’s New Years Eve dance and fundraiser will be held at the Don Ross Centre on Dec. 31. It is the third year at Don Ross and the venue can hold up to 400 people. Player and manager of the Combines, Aaron Cadrin, said they sold out the last two years and promised it will be the best party in town.

“First of all the ticket comes with an all you can eat taco bar at midnight from Taco Time,” Cadrin said. “We also have about $2,500 in door prizes including some 4K TVs. There will be a beer pong tournament and while other places are selling booze at $6 a drink we will be selling drinks for $4.”

Money raised will go towards the team’s expenses for the season. Cadrin said this is the biggest fundraising event for the team and added each home game costs the team $2,000 dollars alone. He added any excess will be donated to a local charity.

The Combines held a Christmas dance on Dec. 23 after a game and donated 25 per cent of the proceeds to the empty stocking fund. Cadrin said it looks like the total donation will be roughly $1,200.

“When the community sees our organization is doing stuff like that, I think they feel even better about coming out and supporting us,” Cadrin said. “I don’t know too many hockey teams in the province — senior non profit hockey teams — that are donating $1,200 to a local charity.”

Cadrin added the team has sold just over 200 tickets as of right now, which would have them break even for the event.

Tickets are $30 each and can be purchased at Taco Time or Freedom Skate and Snow. If they aren’t sold out tickets will also be available at the doors of the Don Ross Centre. The dance starts at 9 p.m. and will run until 2:30 a.m.
