Project Poinsettia brings holiday cheer to the Battlefords

Dec 9, 2016 | 4:00 PM

Project Poinsettia is spreading Christmas cheer throughout northwest Saskatchewan.

Roughly 500 poinsettias were delivered to patients in hospitals and long-term care facilities in the Battlefords Friday.

Local CUPE vice president Linda Vancuren said the poinsettias cheer up patients and bring a Christmas spirit to the facilities.

“A lot of the patients have family who live far away and don’t come home at Christmas because of different circumstances, and all the workers in there are hands-on workers, most of them are CUPE workers and those residents become their families,” she said. “And when you get a flower it really just makes you feel good.”

The project was started by radio station Q98 a few years ago in the Battlefords and expanded to include the entire Prairie North Health Region this year. Q98 partners with CUPE and many local organizations and businesses to make the project happen.

Poinsettias have already been delivered in the Meadow Lake area, Battlefords area, Cut Knife and Maidstone. Next week, the Poinsettia Project will be making its way to Lloydminster, Edam, Turtleford and St. Walburg.
