Saskatoon, Winnipeg lose out on 2019 World Juniors

Dec 2, 2016 | 10:00 AM

Saskatoon’s bid to bring the world juniors back to Saskatchewan was passed over in favour of the west coast.

Hockey Canada announced Thursday the 2019 World Junior Hockey Championship will be held in Vancouver and Victoria, BC.

Saskatoon had also been vying for the hosting rights in a joint bid with Winnipeg.

“While hosted in Vancouver and Victoria, the bid put forward by BC Hockey and the province is truly provincial in nature, with positive impacts extending province-wide to communities beyond the two host-cities,” said Scott Smith, chief operating officer for Hockey Canada in a press release.

Winnipeg hasn’t hosted the World Juniors since 1999 while Saskatoon last hosted in 2010.

This year’s World Juniors are being hosted in Toronto and Montreal, with live coverage on 650 CKOM and 980 CJME.
