Local education centre celebrates community and support at grand openings

The new Battlefords Trade and Education Centre has officially opened and it was a tear-filled affair.

Executive director Mona Leece had to wipe tears from her eyes as she thanked their supporters at the event on Friday, Nov. 4.

“The support of the community is–I know it’s always been there, but it really shows that the Battlefords is a great community to be from,” she said. “I’m very proud to say I’m from here because the community truly cares.”

The new building, called the Pfeifer Learning Centre, is named after donors Pius and Ida Pfeifer, who also performed the ribbon-cutting ceremony. Several rooms in the building were also named for families who gave generous donations.

“The participants are overwhelmed and they are just so happy to have a bright wonderful space to be able to work in,” Leece said.

It was the second of two grand opening ceremonies BTEC hosted.

On Thursday, Oct. 3, Battlefords MLA Herb Cox, social services minister Tina Beaudry-Mellor and Cutknife-Turtleford MLA Larry Doke were honoured for the provincial governments support of the new facility.

Beaudry-Mellor said it was amazing to see the facility first-hand and meet participants who benefit from it.

“It’s just so wonderful to see the joy of all the people here who will enjoy this facility as their own,” she said.

Cox said the province was proud to contribute to the new facility and he couldn’t praise the local community enough for their fundraising.

“It’s a beautiful, state-of-the-art building and it certainly serves the clients that use this day facility each and every day and do great work in our community,” he said. “I think this was long overdue.”
