Liberals edge Tories in fundraising as NDP donations dry up in third quarter

OTTAWA — The federal NDP’s money woes have gone from bad to worse as donations continued to dry up during the third quarter of this year.

According to financial reports filed with Elections Canada, the party pulled in $972,607 from 14,553 donors during the period from July to the end of September.

That’s just one tenth of the money the party raked in during the same period last year, when the NDP was briefly leading the pack during the campaign leading to the Oct. 19 federal election.

But it’s also little better than half the amount the party raised during the third quarter of the last non-election year in 2014.

The NDP has been struggling to raise money since finishing a distant third in last fall’s election, which saw the Liberals vault from third to first and defeat the Conservatives.

The NDP is in the midst of a leadership contest, but so too are the Conservatives, who continue to give the governing Liberals a run for their money.

The Liberals edged ahead in third quarter fundraising, raking in $3.223 million from 35,180 donors while the Tories pulled in $3.131 million from 29,073.

For the Liberals, that represents a slight decline of less than $45,000 over the same period in 2014.

For the Conservatives, long the unrivalled fundraising champions, it represents a drop of just over $1 million.
