Producers back harvesting, but behind on five year average

Oct 27, 2016 | 12:00 PM

Warmer temperatures have melted snow in parts of the northwest region giving some producers the chance to finish their harvesting.

Eighty per cent of the crop is in the bin, only two per cent behind the provincial average at 82. The five year average for this time of year, however, is 98 per cent harvested.

The Meadow Lake and Rabbit Lake areas still have three to four inches of snow out on the fields. Rain and snow is causing bleaching, sprouting and lodging in crops, and waterfowl and wildlife are moving on the crops still out in the field.

Most producers have indicated the ground needs to freeze before harvest can continue and many fields are too wet to haul bales.
