The Town of Battleford will welcome in a new mayor and council in the coming weeks.

Unofficial results have declared town councillor Ames Leslie as mayor for the next four years, beating out fellow councillor David George.

After learning the results, Leslie said he was going to head home to hug his wife and kids and have a good night’s sleep after an exhausting campaign. He said he looks forward to meeting with council to share where they all plan to talk about Battleford moving forward.

“I hope that as a team we can definitely look at the town from a whole perspective and help grow the town,” he said. “We have some essential things we need to take care of. First and foremost is the post office and our liquor store. Then I hope to continue to expand our town, both the business sector and continuing to provide those residential homes and lots that people can afford.”

Elected council members, according to unofficial results, are incumbents Susan McLean Tady, Shelly Boutin-Gervais, Gordon Yarde and Doug Laing, and new councillors Judy Pruden and Kevin Russell.

More than 1,000 people voted in Battleford, according to preliminary results. Leslie said he thought successful campaigns from the candidates this year made a huge difference in getting people out to vote.

“The campaign was good–it was very exhausting, but very humbling at the same time,” he said. “I definitely have to commend all the citizens of Battleford who came out and voted.”

Mayor and council will be sworn in on November 7.
