AAA Stars squeak out win in shootout

Oct 20, 2016 | 1:58 PM

The AAA Stars were outshot once again in Wednesday’s road game, but this time they came away with a 4-3 win in a shootout over the Saskatoon Blazers.

Lance Alm played magnificently once again, stopping 38 of 41 shots in regulation and overtime, before stopping five of seven shooters in the shootout.

The game was scoreless after one period of play, but Jaden Shewchuk got the Stars on the board early in the second, with the assist going to Adam Beckman.

Jake Chartier of the Blazers tied the game at one before the end of the period but when the third began, the Stars quickly restored their lead and then some, as Dylan Esau and Tyson Meyers notched two goals within a four-minute span to give the visitors a 3-1 lead.

The Blazers wouldn’t go away easily, however, getting to within one with 12 minutes left in the game, and then tying it with 4:55 remaining. Those goals came from Braden Krzak and Shane Hounsell.

Overtime would solve nothing and so a shootout was necessary.

After three shooters each, it was tied at one on goals from Shewchuk and Reagan Poncelet, forcing sudden death. It wasn’t until the seventh round that a winner could be determined, as Stars forward Parker Gavlas scored and Alm stopped Noah Bankowski.

The win pushes the Stars record on the season to 2-3-0-1.

This weekend, the team will host the Tisdale Trojans at the Civic Centre on Saturday and Sunday. Both games are scheduled for 2 p.m.
