‘Betcha Didn’t Know’ tours put Battlefords businesses on display

Members of the Battlefords business community donned hard hats and safety glasses Wednesday as the Northland Power energy centre opened its doors to visitors.

Four groups of Chamber of Commerce members toured the facility in a series meant to teach them about new or unique businesses in the community.

“We appreciate the businesses are so open about having chamber members come to view the facilities and learn about what we have in the Battlefords,” member Linda Machniak said. “The power plant of course is important, we all expect the lights to come on when we go to our offices or to our homes, so it’s interesting to see how the power is generated.”

The ‘Betcha Didn’t Know’ tour brought members through the centre, which began operations in 2013, to learn how its gas turbine generates power for roughly 10 per cent of Saskatchewan.

This was the second tour of its kind for the chamber, after the first in spring to the Canadian Feed Research Centre. Machniak said there will hopefully be a few more next year.

“We think it’s important for the chamber members to get to know their community,” she said. “Some of these are not ones they may be aware of or if they have clients that maybe work there, now they have a better understanding of where those people work or what makes up the fabric of our community and from a business perspective that’s important to know.”
