The Prairie North Health Region took its first major step towards furnishing and equipping their new state of the art facility.

According to a press release from the Saskatchewan Hospital, it received an anonymous donation of $1 million on Friday, Sept. 30. The money will go towards the $8 million needed to furnish and equip the new Sask. Hospital currently under construction.

Hospital director Linda Shynkaruk said the donation is much appreciated.

“When we told the patients and staff of the donation, huge smiles erupted on their faces,” she said. “Everyone was really excited, astonished and overwhelmingly grateful.”

The Saskatchewan Hospital New Beginnings campaign is raising money for equipment to treat, protect and nurture its patients. According to the press release, they’ve raised over $1.13 million so far.

The only thing known about the anonymous donor is they are from southern Saskatchewan. New Beginnings fundraising lead Corinne Bernier Delainey said the donations prove the hospital is a provincial facility.

“We are optimistic that people, organizations and businesses from throughout Saskatchewan will open their hearts to meet the needs of these most vulnerable of individuals and support them by donating,” Delainey said.

According to the press release, in 2015 and 2016, roughly 22 per cent of the patients admitted to Sask. Hospital were from northern Saskatchewan, 47 per cent were from central and 30 per cent were from the southern part of the province.

Saskatchewan Hospital is the only psychiatric hospital in the province. Construction of the new facility started in Sept. 2015 and is expected to finish June, 2018.
