Northwest makes biggest jump in harvest progress

Sep 29, 2016 | 12:00 PM

The northwest made the biggest harvest jump of all the regions in Saskatchewan for the week of Sept. 20 to 26.

Sixty-four per cent of the crop is combined, up 16 per cent from last week. The five-year average for this time of year is 75 per cent harvested. Thirty-two per cent is in the swath or ready to straight-cut. Most producers indicate yields are above average and are fair to good quality.

Harvest is the furthest ahead in the southwest where producers have 79 per cent of the crop in the bin. Seventy-seven per cent is combined in the southeast, 61 per cent in the east-central region and 65 per cent in the west-central region and northeastern regions.  Some southern region producers completed harvest.

The region received rain, but in smaller amounts than the rest of the province. The Duck Lake area reported 20 mm, Radisson received 5 mm, 14 mm in Debden, Neilburg reported 1 mm and Meadow Lake had 9 mm. The wet weather during harvest caused some staining in pea crops and bleaching in cereal crops.
