A charity golf tournament in North Battleford almost doubled its $10,000 goal.

The inaugural Brian Maunula Memorial Golf Tournament took place on Sunday, Sept. 25. at the Rustic Nine Golf Course. It was the brain child of six-year-old Shae Maunula who wanted to create a youth tournament to commemorate his late grandfather.

Shae used the tournament as a fundraiser for the Children’s Hospital Foundation and asked all players participating to raise money. The Maunulas set a goal of $10,000 and wound up raising roughly $18,000. Shae’s mother Jaime Maunula was very excited about the turn out.

“It was a phenomenal day. Words can’t even express how smoothly it went,” Jaime said. “We were able to get way beyond our goal. We are definitely looking to do it again next year.”

Just under 50 golfers played ranging from ages four to 14. They were broken down into three divisions based on age. Shae Maunula won the four to seven division, shooting a 44. Nate Poole won the eight to 11 division with a 40 and Kyle Barron won the 12 to 14 division shooting a 36. Each of them won a new set of golf clubs.

The top fundraisers were also awarded prizes. Jasper Gartner raised the most at $1,005 and won a bike voucher for Canadian Tire. Second was Zander Ryan raising $782 and Keaghan Tokaruk came in third raising $727.
