Independent oil spill assessment to be discussed next week

Sep 14, 2016 | 5:00 PM

Locals are trying to bring attention to the damage related to the Husky oil spill by inviting the author of an independent assessment to speak in North Battleford.

“It only makes sense to want to stand up for the water that we all drink and we bathe in, for our future generations to just have clean water because we all fully depend on it,” Janice Benson, a supporter of the Kisiskatchewan Water Alliance Network said.

The network represents a variety of groups and individuals throughout the province, which commissioned an independent study of the spill and response. Hydrogeologist Ricardo Segovia, who was one of the authors of the study critical of Husky’s response to the spill, will be at the North Battleford Public Library Monday, Sept. 19 at 7 p.m. Segovia will present some of the results of his study and answer questions.

The assessment says Husky’s delayed response meant the oil travelled further than it should have. It also alleges Husky wasn’t transparent in the aftermath and response. Husky countered there are several errors in the assessment.
