Community block party aims to bring neighbours together this weekend

Aug 29, 2016 | 12:00 PM

An annual block party meant to foster a sense of community and safety in North Battleford is coming up this weekend.

Organizer Steven Cormons said the reason for the event is simply getting to know each other.

“It really started out as good neighbours meeting each other and creating that positive sense of community,” he said. “It’s sending a message that we’re watching out for each other.”

He said he’d like to see the same idea manifested in smaller ways, through smaller block parties and get-togethers across the city.

Cormons said holding the event for free, including all food, entertainment and prizes, means everyone in the community can enjoy it.

“It’s about the community getting together, it not costing anything and being able to meet each other and share and not have to worry about bringing any money to the event,” he said.

The Neighbourhood Wellness Block Party is on the 1200 block of 107th St. on Saturday, Sept. 3 from noon to 5 p.m. There will be live music, food, door prizes and gift bags for kids. All supplies are donated by local organizations.
