Sask. Baseball Hall ready for induction day

Celebrating and recognizing the province’s baseball history is the aim of the 2016 Saskatchewan Baseball Hall of Fame induction day.

A banquet and induction ceremony is scheduled to take place on Saturday, Aug. 20 at the Alex Dillabough Centre in Battleford following a luncheon and tours of the hall earlier in the day.

President of the Hall of Fame Jane Shury said after 32 years, the inductions are still going strong.

“Every year we think ‘well what’s going to happen next year’, it turns out to be very successful and this year it’s going to be very successful. We have well over 400 people that are attending from across Canada, some from the States,” she said

According to Shury, the purpose of the inductions is to honour and acknowledge those that contributed to Saskatchewan’s rich baseball history.

“It is a fun night, but it is also a very serious and very reminiscent evening for those who played 30, 40 years ago because it gives them a chance to renew old acquaintances and reminisce on that and also to make new memories,” Shury said.

In some cases, the nominees are chosen and notified of the induction a year in advance and Shury says a lot of hard work goes into to getting the invitations out to everybody.

“This is why we get people from across Canada and the States because it’s quite an honour and they certainly make an effort to come to the Battlefords as they have done for 31 years already,” she said,

Shury adds the Hall of Fame is already taking nominations for future inductions and anyone with questions about the nomination process can contact the Hall of Fame.
