Five things to do in the Battlefords area this weekend

Jul 29, 2016 | 2:26 PM

From watching contortionists to listening to classical musicians, there’s a lot to do in the Battlefords for Saskatchewan Day weekend.

Check out the Street Performers Festival

Street performers from all over the world will take over the streets of downtown North Battleford from Friday, July 29 to Sunday, July 31 for the North Battleford International Street Performers Festival. Residents can check out acts like a contortionist, juggler and magician while chowing down on food from local vendors. This event won the Community Event of the Year award from Tourism Saskatchewan last year. The festival runs 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday.

Listen to a local classical musician

Classical musician Cole Knutson will be performing at the Third Avenue United Church on Sunday, July 31. He’ll play solo on saxophone and piano as well as be accompanied by his mentor, pianist Jaya Hoy, for a few songs. The concert is at 3 p.m. and tickets are $20 with a discount for seniors.

Visit your local galleries

Check out the local art scene at the Allen Sapp Gallery and Chapel Gallery. The summer exhibition on now at the Allen Sapp Gallery is “Everyday Life.” Allen Sapp, who grew up on Red Pheasant, was well known for his depiction of everyday living of Aboriginal people and this exhibition features some of his work depicting life on the reserve. Another exhibition on now at the Chapel Gallery is “Dimensions,” a touring exhibition of hand crafted artwork put on by the Saskatchewan Craft Council. “Dimensions” came to North Battleford in early July and leaves September 4. Both galleries are public and operate on donations. They’re open Saturday and Sunday but close Monday for the holiday.

Drive through a self-guided artisan tour

Go on a self-guided tour of artisans in the Northern Lakes area of Glaslyn, Medstead and Glenbush on the Northern Horizons tour. Drive between artists’ studios to see them at work and view their art. Northern Horizons signs will mark the way. Some of the items available to view and purchase include decorated eggs, cupcakes, soap, and oil paintings. The studios will be open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday, July 30 and Sunday, July 31.

Get outside

Head to the Battlefords Provincial Park to go camping, swimming, fishing or hiking, or stay in the Battlefords and head to Finlayson Island to check out the trails and have a picnic.
